Private drug rehabs have the right to incorporate medical treatment and oversight into their programs, or to run simply an emotional support system and peer support-based program. Whichever type of treatment a facility decides to employ, however, there is commonly a need for medical care as provided by professionally licensed doctors and nurses.
A number of natural and normal occurrences can necessitate medical care in drug rehab centers:
1. A heavy withdrawal case.
If a patient is withdrawing from heavy use of alcohol, opiate drugs or other prescriptions, a doctor’s guidance and oversight is highly recommended. In extreme cases, an alcohol withdrawal can at times become violent and even fatal.
2. Interaction of necessary medications with treatment strategy.
If a patient enters treatment with a need for high blood pressure or cholesterol medications, it is unwise to immerse this patient into treatment steps (yoga, walking, vitamin therapy, long and rigorous days, etc.) without consulting a doctor first. You may encounter complications without doing so.
3. Emergency situations.
It is important to have a doctor or nurse on call in case of extreme situations or emergencies. In the field of drug treatment, you must always be alert to the possibility of addicts bringing drugs, alcohol or pills on the premises. In these situations, medical oversight is considered extremely valuable and even vital to the safety of all concerned.
Drug treatment facilities in some states currently face regulation by the government of medical practices in the program; a topic covered in many recent articles. This outdated law, set in place over a decade ago, has treatment experts frustrated with their state-imposed restrictions on medical care during drug rehab. Factually, the use of medical resources should be completely up to the individual program and not regulated by the state.
